Don’t they usually show up at the most inopportune moment? You know, they just appear to come out of nowhere!
It seems to me they also have another name. Fear.
Aren’t obstacles really just fear in disguise? Something you think you can’t do? Or are afraid to do? Something you create to put a barrier up?
Think about that one.
I hear it all the time. Great writers telling me why they can’t pen a book. Marketers telling me why they can’t do a video. Small business owners telling me why they can’t have a 6-figure-a-year (or beyond) business. People stuck in j.o.b.s. who think they can’t possibly be their own boss.
How many times have you heard this?
“I always wanted to (fill in the blank with their dream).” What follows is usually a deep sigh or a shrug of the shoulders because they think it will never happen.
That’s the real show-stopper.
What we think.
It sounds so ridiculous. So simplified. Yet, that’s the real deal. The only obstacle is you.
Oh, I know. It comes disguised in a million other ways. Short on funds, lacking experience, not enough knowledge, family crisis, you name it. Any of those sound familiar? I can give you thousands more.
But get honest.
If you really, really want to achieve something, all those obstacles will not detour you. Yes, they’ll try to knock you down, chew you up, and spit you out, but ultimately you hold the key.
Do you know what I love about success stories? They all have a common thread. The big, fat, in-your-face fear factor that happens right before the finish line. It’s that fork in the road moment when you close your eyes and just go for it. That’s the common denominator. And guess what?
There’s only two possible scenarios.
Success or Failure.
That’s it. The only two.
Think about this . . .
In stepping out, which scenario scares you the most? Surprise! Doing the thing or taking the action is not the scary part. It’s the result. Fear of failure or fear of success.
Either way, if you don’t do it, you stay the same. Nothing changes if nothing changes.
Be aware of what is really holding you back. It can usually be found by looking in the mirror!
And while we’re on the subject, let’s call the obstacles what they really are. Excuses.
We all have dreams. Don’t let your own obstacles stand in the way of achieving yours!
