Humor me here.
Someone asked me again today. “What exactly do you do on the internet?”
Isn’t that the million dollar question? At least to online marketers.
It’s really hard to say, isn’t it? Actually, it’s very simple to say, it’s hard for others to understand. So, I always begin with, “I sell products.”
That usually opens up a can of worms.
“What kind of products?” I always like that one because the answer leads to more bewilderment.
“Informational products. Digital. Audios. Videos.” Oops. Did I say videos? That usually gets the look. You know the one. The look that says please don’t tell me you’re selling porn. No, of course not. I’m selling problem-solvers.
It’s at this point that they want to know who I’m selling to.
That one’s easy. “People on my list.”
Their confusion by this time usually prompts the big question. “Are you making any money?”
Hmmmm. I’m never quite sure what to say here. Of course I’m making money or I wouldn’t be doing it. I’m never sure if they are really asking if I’m making money or do they really want to know how much? And, if they want to know how much, how do I answer that? I can’t think of any other business person that would be asked in polite company how much money they make. It’s absurd.
So, my standard answer to that question is, “I’m doing OK. Can’t complain.”
To which they usually reply, “Some day, when you have time, sit down and tell me exactly what you do. OK?”
Sure. We’ll see how long it takes your eyes to gloss over.
We are a different breed. I know it. All my online marketing friends know it. We have a different approach to business. Old school is not for us. We are cutting edge. What we do is unique.
It’s hard to explain to others exactly what we do. But suffice it to say I love it!
