Are You A Groupie?

by Martha Giffen

Remember groupies?  I guess they still exist.  Back “in the day” they were fans who followed rock bands around while they toured.  One might call them devoted to the extreme.

Well, there’s a new type of groupie on the scene.  Although you’ll find plenty of  enthusiasm in this new bunch, you won’t find any starry-eyed, creepy fanatics lurking about!

Welcome to the new groupies!

I’m referring to all the groups within the social media sites.  Have you joined one yet?  If not, you are totally missing out!

It’s not enough to be connected to Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn any more.  Aren’t they starting to feel like overcrowded train stations?  To avoid that sense of way-too-many-people-in-one-place and to create places for real interaction, you have to go deeper.

That would be joining groups.

Now, I’m not suggesting joining anything just to be joining.  That’s always a dead end.  But, what if you could connect with a whole new audience for your message?  Interested now?

As a marketer, I am always looking for new and improved ways to get my message out.  As someone who uses social networking to the hilt, I am also always seeking new opportunities to connect with people.

The new answer is groups.

They are easy to find.  On Facebook, simply enter your keywords into the same search box you use for finding friends.  Groups will show up.  On LinkedIn, it couldn’t be any easier.  There is a “groups” tab on your home page.  LinkedIn will actually suggest groups “you may like.”  That sure simplifies the process!

Groups are yet another place to share your content, meet new people, and grow your biz.  My experience has been fantastic!  I’ve seen growth in my blog readership, my customer base, and my overall network.

So far, I haven’t ventured far enough out to create my own group, but I’m heading that way.  Why?  Because I like the intimacy of a small group.  Of a group of people willing and able to share great content with each other.  A group wanting its members to succeed.

That’s what’s out there!

If you haven’t jumped in yet, browse around.  There’s a group just waiting for you!
