All stories start at the beginning and mine is no exception.
I was a stay-at-home Mom for 20 years. Watched my husband start a business from our basement, saw him work out of our home for many years, begin to add employees, and finally get “real” office space for his company. I had an “upclose and personal” view of what owning a business looked like. And felt like.
My first taste of internet profits came from e-bay. One day, I took pictures of a few items I no longer wanted (not great pictures and not great items either!) and listed them on e-bay. The next morning, I checked to see if my items were still there and SHOCK. . . . . people had bid on them! Oh my gosh! It was that easy?
So, for the next several years, I repeated that process many times.
Having an E-bay business never really interested me because I wasn’t inclined to store inventory. But I was continually drawn to the stories of people making money using the internet. And, because of my e-bay experience, I KNEW it was possible!
Fast forward. Sons grew up. Mom got bored. Decided to start a business. (there’s a whole lot of other stuff between the lines like how I finished college and managed to get a law degree in my 40’s but I’ll save that for another post!) Became a Realtor and was in the process of growing a pretty nice real estate business when the economy took a little slide.
I had never stopped reading the stories about people having successful online businesses. In fact, I was using the internet quite a bit in my real estate business and was seeing the value in it. Real estate is a fun business but you are in the car alot, work most weekends, and many deals are made in the late evenings. Fact was, I was missing being at home and having my weekends free.
But I enjoyed having my own business. Alot.
I decided to really research the internet marketing thing.
Through some other interesting turns and twists (again, that I’ll share later) I ended up last July(2008) at an internet marketing seminar in San Antonio put on by Pat O’Bryan. I had read his book, Your Portable Empire, and he had a compelling rags to riches story. I thought, “If that guy can do it, so can I.” After all, I wasn’t exactly in rags!
But I was somewhat naive. I actually believed when I showed up at that seminar with my laptop that I would go back home to Alabama three days later and have an online business!
Now, I am not dumb about business, but I seriously underestimated the internet marketing business. Just like any other, there is a learning curve. For me, it proved to be a rather large one.
If you are tech savvy, more power to you. I’m not and therein was the challenge. Good news for all you newer- than- new beginners: You don’t have to be. I’m still tech challenged. But, I now know where to go for help and I’ll be adding links and blog posts to help you too.
Stay tuned. . . . . we’re just getting started!
