Did you know that yesterday was National Donut Day?
Participating Dunkin Donuts shops gave away a free donut to everybody who came in and bought a beverage. Clever.
Who doesn’t like donuts?
Who doesn’t like free?
So, what the heck does that have to do with being on online marketer? Everything.
Giving away something free gets people in the door. They try it, like it, and subsequently buy more. If you eat one donut, chances are, eventually, you will buy another one. That part of the equation is easy to understand.
Dunkin Donuts could have given away a donut hole. They could have offered just a little sampling but they chose to give away awesome quality content. A free product that they are famous for.
Are you catching on yet?
This is exactly what you need on your site. A freebie. A high quality freebie. It gets people in the door and makes them come back for more. Some call it an “ethical bribe.” I call it good business!
If you are unsure what I mean, look at my site. In the right hand corner, I give away my “7 Steps to Getting Your Biz Online.” It’s fantastic. (well, it is!) It’s quality information that anyone who really wants to put their idea online can use. It has value. Would some gladly pay for the information? Of course. But, because I am giving away value, my customers learn that all of my offerings are of value. Just like the donuts!
I know, it’s difficult to give away some of your hard work. And making those donuts was hard work too.
However, the pay off in good will and customer loyalty is priceless.
The lesson: Offer a top quality freebie. And enjoy a donut while you do it!
