Blog Posts: How Long Is Long Enough?

As a seasoned blogger, the second most frequently asked question I get from new bloggers is, “How long should my blog posts be?”  This always follows the how-many-times-a-week-should-I-post question.

The answer to the first is at least three times per week and the answer to the second is what this blog post is all about.

Does size matter?

I’m talking about length here. Of your blog post.

It seems the search engines tend to like at least 300 words and not more than 600 so you can keep that thought in the back of your mind.  It’s always nice when Google is happy.

But I have a lot MORE to say!

That’s where frequency comes in.  Since it is always better to post more frequently, my suggestion to any long-winded bloggers would be to break that post down into smaller chunks and spread them out over a day or two.  If the idea is really drawn-out, why not turn the post into a series? That creates orderly posts AND brings back readers on a daily basis.

Have mercy on your reader!

Think about it.  Who really wants to spend all day on your blog?  If you want happy, recurring readers, keep with the shorter posts!  I’m not saying you have to cut out any relevant information, just be smart about it.

Formatting counts!

One tip that can keep your blog post from seeming too long is making sure you put breaks between the paragraphs and keep your paragraphs to a nice four lines.  It’s easy on the eyes and folks will stay with you longer!  Don’t be afraid of white space.

A reminder . . . .

Length can be thrown out the window if your content stinks.  Quality content is content that gets read again and again.

Now, go out there and blog your heart out.  And, be sure to have fun while you’re doing it!
